  10.            Hedges  although rarely  planted in  recent times  are
  11.            once  more back  in  vogue.  They probably  lost their
  12.            popularity   because  of   the  necessary  maintenance
  13.            required to keep them looking their best.

  15.            Today however with so many and varied powered tools to
  16.            simplify the clipping, pruning and shearing of hedges,
  17.            it is no longer an arduous task.

  19.            There  is no  escaping the  added beauty  a hedge  can
  20.            bring to  your garden. The  privacy from prying  eyes,
  21.            the protection  from the elements, and  the cool green
  22.            natural barrier  they provide, not only  is restful to
  23.            the eyes  but blends perfectly into  the landscape and
  24.            gives shelter to birds and wildlife.

  26.            When planting  a hedge it  is better to  form a trench
  27.            rather than to plant into individual holes. By digging
  28.            a  trench you  improve the  soil in  the direction you
  29.            want the hedge to grow.

  31.            Add  large quantities  of organic  compost and  animal
  32.            manures and work well into the soil.

  34.            For  a single  hedgerow the  trench should  be half  a
  35.            metre  wide. If  you want  to keep  animals and people
  36.            out, then  plant two rows  of hedge with  a chain wire
  37.            fence  in the  middle. As  the hedge  grows, the chain
  38.            wire fence will become quite invisible.

  40.            A formal hedge needs to  be clipped two to three times
  41.            per year. Clipping should produce a hedge wider at the
  42.            base than at the top. This will allow the sun to reach
  43.            the base  of the hedge  and so maintain  healthy, even
  44.            and vigorous growth.

  46.            An informal  hedge can be  left to grow  with only the
  47.            need for  a little judicious  pruning while young,  to
  48.            train the  hedge to grow in  the desired direction and
  49.            to assist it in growing thickly.
